What to Do In Case of Stroke

It is important that you are informed about strokes. Start with the risk factors of having a stroke; from these you will be control your overall health condition and the way your lifestyle is. Being aware of the warning signs and symptoms of an impending stroke is also essential. This can help you to be prepared in case you ever do have a stroke so that you will know what to do. Make sure you get immediate medical attention if you suspect a stroke is coming.

Knowing and understanding the risk factors of a stroke is important. There are two types of risk factors, the first are considered as uncontrollable risk factors. These are factors that cannot be changed including your age, family history and race, gender and previous stroke and heart disease. While on the other hand there are risk factors that can be controlled or changed including high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, diabetes, other heart diseased, imbalanced diet and obesity. Knowing these controllable risk factors may help you in being careful about the food you eat and your lifestyle in general.

The warning signs of stroke include numbness in the face, arms and legs which can be on either side of the body and can be on the upper or bottom half of the body or even both sides of the body can be affected. You may also experience trouble with speech and difficulty understanding others. A sudden confusion, dizziness, tiredness and loss of coordination are also warning signs. But all these signs will depend on what part of the brain is affected. You may experience one or a combination of these signs. What is really important here is that you know yourself or the person affected very well and if they begin to behave apart from their usual selves, that means something is wrong, and it needs immediate medical attention.

With all this information at your hand, the next thing to do is to keep the important numbers of the people who can immediately attend to the situation. This can be your doctor, numbers of the nearby hospital or medical center, a family member or anybody who is familiar with these conditions. These contacts should be placed beside the telephone or anywhere in the house that has an easy access and you should have a copy of these numbers with you anywhere you go and anytime of the day.

Being prepared is the best possible thing that you can do when you suspect a stroke is possible. A stroke is a condition that needs immediate medical attention to be able to prevent damage to the brain and to the body.
